Soccer, get set                                Soccer opener planned

With all the activity going on in the local ‘good-weather’ sports associations, summer must be fast approaching.

The newly formed Grimsby minor soccer league held its first registration last night, with an expected turnout of about 250 boys.  Boys between the ages of 8 and 12 were accepted into the house league program.

It costs $5.00 to register a boy in the Minor Soccer program, covering the cost of sweaters and balls. Officials of the new league are optimistic that it will have at least 12 teams and possibly 14.

Anyone who wishes their boy to play soccer and missed the registration night is asked to call Tom Davis at 945 2307.

The newly formed Grimsby Soccer Association will have dignitaries and all players out for the inaugural game slated for 6 p.m. this Saturday, May 26, at Lakeview School.

Mayor Harold Costello will be among the town and league officials who will take part in the opening ceremonies to kick off the season officially.

All players and coaches will be on hand, and the first game of the season will pit Central Dynamos against Kronas Realty after the ceremonial opening.

All systems are go, reported association president Brian Elder at the conclusion of an executive meeting last week.

The association expressed a strong vote of thanks to the many clubs and merchants that have helped them reach the point where more than 200 boys have been outfitted and ready to play.

“The co-operation has been just great,” said Elder, adding an invitation to all soccer fans for the Saturday opener.

Plans for soccer season                                Soccer starts practice today

After a successful first year of soccer the Grimsby Minor Soccer Association’s Executive Committee is planning to expand for the upcoming season.

The programs this year will involve age groups 8-10 years for boys.

Also providing enough interest is shown, it is the intention to provide recreational soccer to girls aged 10-13 years.

Registration for the upcoming season will be held at Central Public School on Friday March 1, from 6 to 9 p.m. and on March 2 from 10a.m. to noon.

Flyers have been circulated to all area schools requesting interest in the above mentioned ages.  Also, due to the increased program, the association has announced that all parents and others interested in offering their assistance would be more than welcome.

Experience in soccer is not essential as there are plane to have soccer seminars introducing the game to all new personnel.

The contents of these seminars will focus on refereeing coaching and the rules of the game of soccer.

In order to fulfill the intended programs this year the association feels it is essential to provide the proper supervision to ensure that the children of Grimsby have a fun-filled summer.

Fro further information on this years program please contact Brian Elder at 945 3946 or Tom Davis at 945 2307

The Grimsby Minor Soccer Association will start practices on Wednesday, April 3 at Grimsby Secondary School from 7 to 10p.m.

This is for boys born in 1964-1965-1966 (the Atoms) and for boys born in 1960-1961 (Peewees)

Association officials said boys who have paid their registration fee will be contacted as to the time they have to be there.

Others who still want to join and boys and girls who filled in a flyer at school, and have not paid their fee yet, can do so at this time.

Boys born in 1962-1963 and girls will start the following week on Thursday, April 11.  Times and place will be announced.
