ABOUT
MATCH OFFICIALS

The commitment of the Grimsby Town Youth Soccer Club extends to the training and advancement of soccer match officials, creating an environment that enables them to reach their full potential within the profession. GTYSC provides a comprehensive, multi-tiered program tailored to the diverse levels of soccer available at the Club.

CAREER PATH

GTYSC offers three levels of officiating: Game Leader (U8/9), Small Sided Game (U10/11), and Entry Level (U12+). Young officials usually begin in the Game Leader or Small-Sided Game categories to develop their knowledge and confidence.

GAME LEADER (U8/9)

Launched by Ontario Soccer in 2016, the Game Leader program acts as an initiation into officiating, introducing players, coaches, and officials to the game. The program prioritizes learning, development, and overall enjoyment, and individuals aged 12 and above are eligible to pursue this certification. GTYSC views it as a valuable introduction to both officiating and coaching.

SMALL-SIDED GAME (U10/11)

The game structure designed for U10 and U11 players incorporates adjusted rules aimed at promoting skill development. Emphasizing participation over results, this format abstains from keeping scores or standings. Officials take on an educational role for both players and coaches, overseeing the game within the framework of the Laws of the Small-Sided Game. To be eligible for the Small-Sided Game certification course, candidates must reach 12 years of age by March 31 or earlier in 2024.

ENTRY LEVEL (U12 AND UP)

The game structure applicable from U12 to Adult adheres to FIFA Laws of the Game, with officials responsible for maintaining these laws in a secure setting. GTYSC promotes ongoing education for officials, building on their expertise starting from the Small-Sided Game level. U12 matches are played 9v9 on a adjusted field following FIFA Laws. Although individuals aged 14 and above are encouraged to begin at this level, officials also have the option to commence at the Small-Sided Game level.

CAREER ADVANCEMENT

Officials have opportunities to upgrade their skills at various competitive levels. Through collaboration Niagara District and Ontario Soccer, GTYSC provides regional and provincial programs for officials of all ages. The Club strongly encourages regular advancement in education and offers advanced training through Canada Soccer programs for qualified applicants.

MATCH OFFICIAL ADVISOR PROGRAM

At Grimsby Town Youth Soccer Club, we are committed to nurturing Match Officials throughout their careers. This commitment is exemplified through our comprehensive mentoring initiative, known as the Advisor Program, designed to facilitate the exchange of soccer knowledge and foster personal growth. Our mission is to provide unwavering support to aspiring officials, offer constructive feedback, and promote continuous development.

Introducing the "Referee Advisor Program" for the upcoming year 2023, the Club has assembled a dedicated group of senior Match Official advisors from our diverse pool of Officials. Each advisor will be assigned their own group of Officials, serving as a primary contact point for guidance and assistance throughout the season. Our team of advisors brings a wealth of experience and various mentoring styles to ensure optimal support for our Officials.

For Adult Officials, we are enthusiastic about offering coaching and assessment opportunities to help you refine your skills. Additionally, in collaboration with the Niagara Soccer Association, we will provide fitness programming to bolster your overall development.
